Altea extract properties

The importance of marshmallow in cosmetic use is mainly linked to its mucilage content, substances characteristic of plant cells which are recognized as having a useful moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and mucous membranes. Chemically, these are heteropolysaccharides which, thanks to the numerous hydroxyl groups present, are particularly hydrophilic. The extraordinary moisturizing capacity of these natural polysaccharides is precisely due to their particular behavior in an aqueous environment: the mucilages are, in fact, capable of absorbing considerable quantities of water, generating fluid gels (hydrocolloids) which, applied to the skin surface, form a thin film , elastic, transparent and with isoepidermal pH, capable of transferring water to the stratum corneum, giving the skin elasticity and hydration. It is important to underline that the water is retained by the mucilages due to gelation equilibrium and not due to hygroscopicity, so they are able to donate water to the stratum corneum of the epidermis without then taking it away from it when the ambient temperature is high and the humidity low. or when exposed to the sun. On the contrary, in unfavorable climatic conditions the thin film formed by the mucilage dries externally forming a real hygrometric shield which continues to hydrate the skin surface hindering the dehydration processes. Thanks to the high mucilage content, marshmallow extracts are therefore characterized by excellent moisturizing, emollient and anti-reddening skin properties.
