Original Ancient African Statues

Large wooden sculptures from West Africa originating from Cameroon. Estimated age: 19th - 20th century.

1. Female figure with child (on the left)

• A typical representation of the mother with child, symbolizing fertility, motherhood, and family continuity.
• The character at the base of the statue, with animalistic or supernatural features, might represent a protective spirit or a mythological figure.
• The elongated proportions and large eyes are common characteristics of various West African art schools.

2. Female figure

• Features prominent breasts and a pronounced belly, elements often associated with fertility.
• Holds a small bag or container, which in many traditions can symbolize wealth, offerings, or social status.
• The skirt carved with geometric patterns resembles ceremonial attire.

3. Male figure

• Wears a carved beard and a decorated crosswise sash.
• The staff likely signifies authority or the role of elder, priest, or chief.
• This figure also wears a ritual skirt.

4. Regal figure (on the right)

This is likely the most intriguing piece.

It features several symbolic elements:

• An elaborate headdress;
• A fantastical creature perched on its head;
• A scepter or ceremonial staff;
• Rich ornamental patterns on the attire.

In the art of the Benin Kingdom and Yoruba culture, animals like leopards, birds, or fantastical beings on the head often symbolize the spiritual power of the ruler.

Material

They appear to be carved from a single trunk of hard tropical wood (iroko, African mahogany, or similar). The surface looks very dry with a matte patina, likely due to age or exposure.

They could be:
