An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electronic device that provides emergency power to connected equipment in the event of a power outage or electrical grid failure. Its primary purpose is to protect sensitive hardware from power surges and ensure the necessary time to save data and safely shut down devices.

• Offline/Standby: This is the most economical and basic technology. It only intervenes when the power fails, switching to the battery. It does not stabilize the voltage and is only ideal for less sensitive devices.
• Line-Interactive: This is the ideal choice for home and office use. It integrates a system called AVR (electronic voltage regulator). It corrects voltage fluctuations without using the battery, extending its life.
• Online double conversion: It offers the highest level of protection for servers and medical equipment. It constantly filters the power, converting it from AC to DC and then back to AC again. The switchover time in the event of a blackout is zero milliseconds.

1. The electrical power (VA and Watts): Calculate the sum of the consumption of all the devices to be connected (e.g., PC, monitor, router) expressed in Watts. Choose a UPS with a power rating 20-30% higher than the calculated total to handle startup peaks.
2. The type of output waveform: Budget models generate a pseudo-sine wave (square or modified). If you need to connect computers with power supplies equipped with active PFC (such as gaming PCs), it's essential to choose a pure sine wave UPS to avoid sudden shutdowns or humming noises.
3. The required battery life: The internal battery is typically sufficient to provide between 5 and 15 minutes of battery life at full load. This time is intended solely for saving work and shutting down the system, not for continued operation.
