Olfactory Definition

In perfumery, the term "amber" primarily refers to an accord (a blend of various raw materials) that reproduces a specific scent rather than the fossil resin (yellow amber) that has an incense-like pine aroma. The classic amber accord is historically achieved by combining mainly:

• Labdanum: A resin with a warm, leathery, and balsamic scent.
• Vanillin/Vanilla: Adds an enveloping and powdery sweetness.
• Other resins and balsams: Such as benzoin, to provide depth and persistence.

Another substance linked to the name is ambergris, a rare and precious animal-based product (from the sperm whale) with marine and animalic nuances, nowadays almost exclusively replaced by synthetic molecules like Ambroxan due to the ban on whale hunting.
