Annaffiare and watering are two terms probably derived from the same Latin etymology (in and afflare 'to blow'). They are both used since the Middle Ages. Already in the first edition of the Vocabulary of the "Accademici della Crusca" (1612), under the heading "Irrigate" we read «Today more commonly "to water".
