The Marche is a region in central Italy that plays an important role in the production of various white wines and red wines. The viticultural fabric extends for about 20 thousand hectares. Viticulture in the Marche has very ancient origins, dating back to the time of the Greeks, at the beginning of the 4th century BC. The arrival of the Etruscans, then, determined a flourishing development of the cultivation of the vine, so much so that in Roman times, the cultivation of the vine already represented a driving sector of the local economy. The arrival of phylloxera, however, caused the almost total destruction of the vineyards, whose reconstruction took a long time. The vineyards of the region are equally divided for the production of white wine and red wines. The most cultivated and representative vine of the region is Verdicchio. Passerina, Pecorino, Biancame, Lacrima, Ciliegiolo, Montepulciano, Malvasia, Sangiovese, Trebbiano Toscano, Vernaccia, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Nero are also cultivated. The region boasts Controlled and Guaranteed Designations of Origin (DOCG) and Controlled Designations of Origin (DOC)
